The historical background of Kadudevole.
KThe city of Kaduwela would not have been created without the Siddha Rankadu Patthini Devalaya or Kadudevola, which is located on a beautiful hillock facing the Kelani River on the road from the center of Duwela to Avissawella. According to the “Book of Names with Explanations”, Kaduwela is commonly used as Kaduwela because of the Patthini Devalaya. Similarly, if there is a city called Devola, it is Kaduwela. Although some say that this belongs to the Sitawaka era and the Kandy era, historical evidence provides evidence that the origin of Kadudevola goes beyond that.
The belief in the Goddess Pattini was established in this country during the reign of the sixth Parakramabahu. This is further confirmed in the study of the pulpit texts such as Devala Law, Devala Birth and the Kokila Sandesha. Kadudevola, which was included in the temple precincts during the reign of the sixth Parakramabahu, came to the fore once again during the Sitawaka era. This was when Kadudevola was used as a fortress by King Rajasinghe of Sitawaka. With the collapse of the Sitawaka kingdom in 1592 AD, Kadudevola was lost to the Sinhalese in 1632 AD and a written history of the temple emerged again in 1800 AD from the report of Captain Robert Percival, who was in charge of the 19th Army Division of the British. AD It states that in 1797, his army, which was en route to Kandy to suppress the rebellion against the Dutch, was attacked by Sinhalese hiding there as it passed through Kadudevola.
After that, the Kadudevola resumed around 1812 AD. That was during the late Kandy period. Many legends come to confirm this in history. It is also further confirmed by the Esala Perahera festival, which has been going on for 211 years.
It must be said that this sword temple, which is dedicated to the goddess Pattini as a sub-god, is a temple with a historical value exceeding five centuries (550 years) and is a sacred place full of great miracles, where the divine ornaments of Goddess Pattini, the rosary and the golden sword used for cutting water annually are also enshrined. So, with the inspiration of this sword temple, with the help of the great Mother Satpattini, may the current epidemic conditions all over the world be eradicated and the country prosper!!
